What to Expect During the Breck Epic Stage Race
Nora FiermanThe Breck Epic is one of the most legendary stage races in the U.S., attracting mountain bikers from around the world to the high-altitude trails of Breckenridge, Colorado. With six grueling stages covering some of the most fun singletrack in Colorado, the Breck Epic tests endurance, strategy, and grit. Whether you're a first-timer or back for more, here are my top five takeaways.
1. Nutrition and Hydration Are Key
Six days of hard riding at altitude requires constant fueling. Dehydration and bonking are common mistakes that have major consequences.
Practice fueling before the race. Prep meals in advance so food is accessible when you need it. Your stomach will likely churn from six days of gels, so set yourself up for success by making meal prep easy. I found myself surviving on a noodle and butter diet because I couldn’t handle much flavor. At the start, I could eat two pancakes for breakfast, but by the end, I could barely finish one. Be organized—your future self will thank you.
2. Being Strong on the Descents Will Give You a Leg Up
There are a lot of really strong climbers in the Breck Epic. I consider myself a strong climber, but I’m an even stronger descender. Knowing the trails well helped me plan ahead—if I was passed on a climb but knew the descent was coming soon, I didn’t stress. I made up major time on the descents, which allowed me to hold my overall pace. Being confident and efficient on descents was a huge advantage.
3. The Camaraderie Is Awesome
While the Breck Epic is physically grueling, it’s also one of the most fun and welcoming mountain bike races out there. I made new friends, shared fuel when others needed it, and found a little community within the race. Everyone is hurting together—so be supportive. Encouraging a fellow racer might just lift your own spirits too.
4. Having a Crew Makes a Huge Difference
I was lucky enough to have someone crew for me throughout the race. This meant easier meal prep, smoother aid stations, and a recovery shake in my hand as soon as I crossed the finish line. I know, lucky girl. If you can have a support system, it makes a massive difference in your experience and recovery.
5. It’s Painful, But It’s Fun
In the women’s bathroom each morning, people were passing around Tums. Stomachs were a mess from the sheer volume of gels consumed. Everyone was dealing with their own struggles—tired legs, unpredictable performance, and the mental battle of showing up every day. But through all the suffering, there was a sense of shared experience that made it fun. You push your limits, but you’re not alone.
Final Thoughts
The Breck Epic is one hell of a race. It’s challenging, demanding, and at times brutal—but it’s also uniquely special. The Breck Epic is a mountain biker's race through and through.
P.S. I wrote this blog post after completing my first Breck Epic.
